The tea exporters bought 5,530,474 kgs of made tea that generated Sh 1.7 billion after the sale of 5,530,474 kgs of made tea sourced from the KTDA managed factories through the Mombasa Tea Auction .
At the auction the 53 buyers bought 10 million kgs that were offered by the producers from Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda.
In Kenya, Mununga, and Kimunye tea factories achieved the highest price of Sh 387 per kg( $3) per kg.
The small holder factories that sold the highest volumes according to EATTA report are 18 led by Kinoro with 176,568 kgs, Kionyo 173,099 kgs, Weru 167,768 kgs , Kanyenya ini 152,612 kgs and Makomboki 154,703 kgs among others.
KTDA Chairman Enos Njeru said in the week market 18 factories sold over 100,000 kgs of made tea to the buyers.
“ Despite the emerging challenges related to lack of the market for the tea following the impact of the tea levy of Sh 2.28 per kgs at the value of the auction, the producers have remained committed to quality production of the produce,” said Mr Njeru.
In the market, East African Tea Traders Association (EATTA) Managing Director George Ouma said the Mombasa tea auction auctioned a total of 10 million kgs, where Kenya’s exported 8.4 million kgs from the KTDA factories and the independent producers.
“ Rwanda managed 501,200 kgs, Uganda 1,052 ,254 kgs, and Burundi 8,163 kgs,” said Mr Omuga.
In the dealers category, the auction report detailed that 16 buyers participated where the Global tea and commodities bought 1,563,799 kgs, KTDA owned Chai Trading 1,321,311kgs, Aditya Birla 1,093,374 kgs , LAB International 810,792 kgs, James Finlay 704,951 kgs among others.
