The Murang’a County Government has embarked on a path to transform market centres through the smart city programme.

The local governor Irungu Kang’ata said the new transformation signals a major step towards reshaping Murang’a town to a modern, efficient and well-organised urban status.

Kang’ata described the initiative as a transformative project that will not only improve infrastructure but also uplift the overall quality of life for residents and businesses in the town.

While launching a new programme near Marigiti Market, accompanied by the MCAs, he said his administration has made visible progress under the Smart Cities programme in parts of the town.

“Installation of cabro roads and streets is expected to improve accessibility significantly, making it easier for both pedestrians and motorists to move around Murang’a Town,” he said, adding that for long the longs had walked in dust and muddy surfaces as the development marked a wave of change.

“This programme is about giving Murang’a a new face,” Kang’ata added. “We are working towards a cleaner, more organized and digitally connected town that serves the needs of our people efficiently.”

Beyond the cabro installation on the town streets and roads, the Smart City Programme incorporates several other components aimed at enhancing urban living.

These include the installation of modern street lighting to improve security and visibility at night, as well as the upgrading of drainage systems to address long-standing challenges of flooding, especially during the rainy season.

He observed that the initiative is part of a broader vision by his administration to modernise urban centres across the county.

Over the past months, similar projects have been rolled out in various towns, giving them a facelift and making them more attractive to investors.

Present were MCAs led by Charles Machigo.
