A manhunt for the
owner of the ill fated hotel building
that collapsed in Gatanga, Murang’a has been ordered.
Central Regional
Coordinator Wilfred Nyang’wanga said the hotel owner and a Meru businessman Abraham Karuti
Itabari is a person of interest in the
investigations alongside his engineers and foreman on the cause of the
incident.
Karuti is the owner
of the Sun Star Hotel with another branch in Garden estate in Nairobi.
The order was issued
on Saturday when the RC joined Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria in
the inspection of the site where they accused the National Construction
Authority (NCA) over shoddy inspection of the buildings under construction.
Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria when he toured the site where a four storey building collapsed in Gatanga, sub county.
“ The owner is required to assist in the investigations before the state institutes charges on him,”
said the regional coordinator.
Murang’a Governor
said he was not satisfied with the
operations of the NCA as it could have prevented the occurrence of the incident
if its supervisors were keen.
“Since have established the laxity in the NCA now, all the
reports on construction progress in the
county before they are submitted to their headquarters will be passed through the county engineer’s office.
There is dire need to get to know what
is happening in efforts to end hooliganism in the construction industry,” said Iria.
At the same time,
Murang’a County Police Commander Donatha Kiplangat said so far three bodies
have been retrieved from the debris.
She said all the
debris have been cleared through the
efforts by the multi-agency team led by Kenya Defence Force and
the National Police Service.
