The tea sector fetched Sh 1,185,289,880 for the auction of 4,472,792kgs , which were bought by 65 local and international buyers.
In the report the Murang’a based Ngere tea factory presented the highest tea weighing 207,856kgs of tea that earned Sh 55,081,840, followed by Mununga Sh 46,527,110 for sale of 125,410kgs.
The report from Mombasa Tea Auction indicates that the 10 top factories in the sale were Mununga,Gathuthi,Rukuriri, Imenti, Githongo,Ndima, Kathangariri,Kionyo, Kiegoi and Gitugi.
And the Boito factory in Rift valley sold 71,226kgs and fetched Sh 11,111,256 where a kilogramme of tea was sold at Sh156.
Ngere Tea Factory Chairman James Githinji said his factory has continued doing better owing to the quality production of green leaves.
“ At the factory we have a dedicated team of competent staff who work with the board of directors to take the best at the auction market,”said Githinji, also a KTDA board member in zone two.
KTDA Holding Chairman Enos Njeru appreciated the dedicated tea farmers in the counties, saying this will assist in delivery of quality tea in the market.
Kenya tea, he explained, continued to be attracted to the international tea market following the production of the quality tea, adding that in the west of the rift KTDA recognised the efforts made to improve production of the best quality.
“In the market, factories in the west that did better are Momul that fetched Sh19.2million after sale of 72,600 kgs. others are Tebesonisk, Nyankoba , Motigo among others,” said Njeru.
East African Tea Traders Association Managing director Daniel Omuga said in the weekly that the Mombasa Tea Auction auctioned 11,077,472 kgs of tea, where Kenya presented 9,183,374 kgs.
He further explained that Uganda presented 1,140,120kgs, Rwanda 604,068kgs, Tanzania 59,408 kgs, Burundi 67,538kgs, and Mozambique 22,558 kgs.
“ In the market there were 56 tea buyers with the Global tea and commodities lead bought 20,560kgs” said Omuga.
In the Chai Trading bought 14,040kgs, Aditya Birla Global 13,340kgs, L.A.B. International 11,040kgs, James Finlay 10,580kgs among others.
