Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) initiated a community development
project for their corporate social responsibility in Laikipia.
After completion of Rumuruti-Maralal
road, the authority sank three bore holes and 13 water pans, for use
by the community in the surrounding areas.
KeNHA handed over the projects
to the community through its Director of Policy, Strategy and Compliance Eng.
Njuguna Gatitu.
The projects will be
managed by Nyahururu water and sanitation company (Nyahuwasco). This comes in at
a time when water is crucial to the surrounding communities.
The water from the projects
will be used for domestic and small scale agricultural practices to
enhance food production.
In the past, Laikipia County
Government has been providing water to the residents through trucks,
construction of dams, and desilting clogged dams.
Some boreholes have also been installed
with solar power.
All citizens have been encouraged to
harvest rainwater to help them in times of scarce rains, and gain maximum
in terms of irrigation and domestic.
The construction of the road started
seven years ago ( June 11,2013) and was completed on February 14, funded by National Government.
The three boreholes are fully
equipped with each having an attendant’s house, a washroom, a 10,000
liters water tank, a cattle trough and a water drawing stand.
