Murang’a County government has disbursed support to day secondary school learners as leaders castigated the controller of budget for discontinuing the programme despite its importance.

Governor Irungu Kang’ata  disbursed in excess of Sh50 million to support learners  in the Inua Masomo programme initiated to created competition among themselves.

Speaking at General Ihura Stadium in Murang’a,Kang’ata recounted the steps his administration pursued  to ensure the reinstatement of the much needed education programme after the  office of the controller of budget stopped the counties from disbursement of the bursaries.

“Muranga has  become the first county government to dispense bursaries after the Controller of Budget allowed counties to dispense bursaries. CoB had stopped counties from giving bursaries but Murang’a signed an MoU with the Ministry of Education to continue with the provision,” said Kang’ata.

During the function Kang’ata told the leaders to keep off politics and instead focus on development projects that will impact positively on the living standard of the community.

Kang’ata  who was accompanied by his deputy Stephen Munania said his administration was  concerned in tackling  challenges in the devolved function, not politics at this time.

“ Mwai Kibaki  can be remembered for his track record not on his political utterances,  50 years to come it is my hope we leave behind major programmes  for our children,” said the governor.

Kang’ata disclosed that documents  to  convert Kanyuria polytechnic  in Kangema, to  the Michuki National Polytechnic  were at an advanced state.

“ The steps can be accelerated once the county assembly endorses  the decision through a motion,” said Kang’ata following a request by Rwathia MCA Kamau Mwangi.

On the Murang’a Investment Conference, he said, the programme will concentrate on value addition of farm produce thus creating employment to the youth.

In the conference slated at Thika Greens Resort scheduled on June 13 and June 14, Kang’ata said will invite investors for a deliberation on establishment of industries with the Delmonte land.

“Instead of subdividing the Delmonte land, we found it prudent to establish industries rather than subdividing it to industries measuring 50 by 100,” said the governor.
