Tea factories last week sold 4,229,912 kgs of tea that fetched Sh1.4 billion at the Mombasa Tea Auction.
In the market reports, factories in the east of rift fetched Sh1.05 billion after the sale of 2.5 million kgs of team, while the west of rift sold 1.7 million kgs for Sh430.7 million kgs.
The sales are higher than Sh1.2 billion earned in the previous sale after the sale of 3.4 million kgs.
The reports reflect that out of the 70 factories, Ngere tea factory led with fetching Sh44.3 million after the sale of 104,508 kgs of tea.
Weru factory in the second after it sold 92,696 kgs for Sh38.3 million, Kiru factory made Sh38 million after the auction of 92,000 kgs of tea.
The report outlined that in the market other factories in the top list were Mununga Sh35.6 million, Makomboki Sh35 million, Kanyenya ini Sh 34 million, Kagwe Sh33.5 million, Mungania Sh33.3 million and Ndima Sh33.1 million.
The auction took place on November 18 and November 19, where the auction traded 8.2 million kgs from KTDA and the independent tea producers.
KTDA Holding Chairman Enos Njeru says the buyers are in search of the best tea in the market thus encouraging the growers to continue in production of quality tea.
The market, he said, appreciates the best tea in return and offers impressive prices.
“KTDA with partners are presently educating the growers in the west of rift on the best farm management practise focusing on production of quality teas in the coming months,” said Njeru.
Ngere tea factory Chairman James Githinji appreciated the farmers for the production of the quality green leaf in their farms.
“The farmers are in the competition in their catchment areas in the production of quality produce,” said Githinji
In the report, the factories that sold the lowest volumes in the market are Sombogo Sh2.2 million for 8,908 kgs, Kiamokama Sh3.5 million for 14,152 kgs, Mogogosiek Sh4.7 million for 20,168 kgs, Chebut Sh4.9 million for 20,786 kgs and Kobel Sh5.9 million for 24,974 kgs.
In the tea buyers category, Global tea commodities purchased 28,280 kgs, LAB International 11,760kgs, Mitchell Cotts 11,040kgs, Chai Trading 9,700 kgs and Devchand Keshavji 6,080kgs were the best five in the trading.
