Maternity wing at Engineer Hospital has been converted to an Isolation ward exposing expectant mothers to danger.

On Wednesday night, health workers at the facility claimed there were six drivers and three conductors from Public Service Vehicles placed under observation after they developed symptoms related to Covid 19.

Residents in Engineer area in Kinangop expressed their displeasure after expectant mothers were advised to seek services at Naivasha District Hospital in Nakuru county.

John Kimani castigated Nyandarua County Government over the conversion of the facility to an isolation centre.

“This unheard of for the county government led by Governor Francis Kimemia to expose our mothers and daughters to suffering when they are expectant,” said Kimani.

The medics who spoke to The Mountain Journal said the tried to convince the county government to look for alternative sites for isolation purposes.

“We are not against isolation facilities at Engineer but there is no need to expose our women to suffering when the county government can convert learning institutions to isolation centres,” said a health worker.

County Health executive John Njenga dismissed claims that expectant mothers are directed to seek services elsewhere.

“Let those directed elsewhere call my office to register complaints,” said Njenga.

Nyandarua MP Faith Gitau pleaded with Kimemia to reverse the decision to convert the maternity wing to an isolation ward.

“This is painful  and it is not appropriate for expectant mothers being directed elsewhere at the hour of need,” said Ms Gitau.
