The Great Northern Kenya Corridor will pass through Karatina town,

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has said.

The 84 kilometers road will Pass through the town, with the authority's Director General Eng Peter Mundinia clarifying to erase confusion from the public, that the town will not benefit from the Sh40billion project.

Mundinia denied that the design of the Dual Carriageway would exclude the major town along the superhighway corridor.

Mundinia, and board Chairman Eng Wangai Ndirangu said the planned bypass was just a viable option to going through the town.

“The road will still go through Karatina Town, and the people have no problem with our plans to acquire land in the area to pave way for the road,” said Mundinia.

Ndirangu  revealed that the authority would continue to construct the bypasses along the stretch to ensure there was an alternative route.

“This to ensure that we have a formidable plan for the future  should  there be high population in the areas,” he said.

He noted the Authority had already forwarded the land KeNHA was interested in acquiring for government acquisition.

Kenol- Sagana- Karatina- Marwa- Chaka- Nanyuki- Isiolo is part of the Great North Road from Mombasa, designed to connect with Ethiopia and proceed to Cairo in Egypt.

The first phase of the project between Kenol and Marwa will take 36 months to complete.

The contractors are on-site working on diversions not to disrupt the flow of vehicles once the project kicks off.

KeNHA has appointed two contractors to work on the first phase of the project.

Last week, Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the contractors will do an additional 48 kilometer to tarmack  the markets centres that are on the highway.

A trauma center will also be constructed in Makutano area as part of the social corporate strategy by the contractors.
