Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome has resigned following pressure mounted by human right organisations over how the police conducted themselves during the anti finance bill 2023/2024.

Koome has been under siege following the manner the law enforcers handled the youth protestors during the anti finance bill 2024/2024 protests.

The President approved Koome's resignation and appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja in an Acting capacity.

"President William Ruto, on July 12, 2024, accepted the resignation of Japhet Koome as the Inspector General of the National Police Service," read a statement by State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed.

Kanja will be deputised by Eliud Langat as the acting Deputy IG of the Kenya Police Service and James Kamau as the acting Deputy IG of the Administration Police.

Others appointed are Murang’a County Police Commander David Kainga who will be the commander at  national police leadership academy,  William Yiampoy , Director of Operations , Police Headquarters,  Ranson  Lolmodooni, the Commandant at General Service Unit and  Gilbert Masengeli the Commandant  Administration Police College
